Arsenal are after a new goalkeeper this month and are showing an interest in Birmingham City stopper Jack Butland, if you believe what the Daily Star are reporting today.
They claim that Arsene Wenger wants to add another goalkeeper to his ranks to contend with Szczesny and while he would prefer to sign an experienced head, he is tempted to move for Butland after learning Birmingham may have to sell due to their precarious financial situation.
Butland is a superb youngster and is valued at around £6m but I see little point in his signature. Is he an improvement on Szczesny? No. Is he better than Mannone or Fabianski? Yes.
BUT, he’s 19-years-old and Wojciech is 22, so why would we have two young keepers on the books? Szczesny is our long-term No.1 but needs an experienced keeper to learn the ropes from and who can step in when called upon.
Arsenal do need to sign a keeper this month, but we need a reliable and experienced No.2 not another promising youngster. I rate this rumour as 2/5.
