The January transfer window is drawing ever closer and it’s time to start thinking about which players Arsenal should be looking to sign.
We’ve enjoyed an excellent start to the season and currently sit top of the Premier League by two points, while we’re also on course to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League. So you’d be forgiven for thinking we’re in relatively good shape.
We also have a number of players coming back from injury with the likes of Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski set to return to the first team fold in the next couple of weeks. However, I think we’re still at least a striker short of really cementing ourselves as favourites to win the Premier League.
A quick look at the latest bookmaker odds show us that Arsenal are currently short-priced favourites to sign Ilkay Gundogan and Demba Ba before the February 1st deadline. For those who enjoy a flutter, I’d certainly be putting a few quid on Ba coming to the Emirates and according to gamblingsites.org, the best UK bookmaker for football betting is Bet365, so it’s worth using them if you do decide to put a couple of quid down.
Ba has hardly played for Chelsea so far this season and everyone knows we came close to signing him on loan in the summer until Mourinho pulled the plug at the last minute. I’d be shocked if we didn’t have another go in January and this time Ba is likely to really push for the exit door in order to get more first team football under his belt.
I feel he’d be a great addition as he’s got the physical presence to play up top in our system and has plenty of Premier League experience. His goal-scoring record is also decent so fingers crossed we can persuade the Blues to give him to us on loan for the second half of the campaign.
I’m not so sure Gundogan will be a Gunner though. I really don’t see him leaving Borussia Dortmund mid-season and the word on the street is he would prefer Real Madrid.
I also don’t see Arsene Wenger bringing in another central midfielder in January. We have a lot of options in the middle of the park so I don’t think it will be a priority area for the boss. The bookies think we’re the favourites to sign the German midfielder at 5/1, but I think those are some pretty poor odds so wouldn’t be placing any money at that price.
I’d prefer we brought in a left winger or a utility defender this winter, but knowing Arsene he’d go for the attacker ever time! There are a lot of names flying around but none seem dead certs at this point.
So my bet is we’ll bring in a striker, most likely Ba on loan, which should put us in good shape as long as we stay relatively injury free. But I’ll keep my fingers crossed we will bring in either a defender or winger which would really put us in the driving seat.
Who would you like the club to sign in January?
