New Arsenal boss Unai Emery has wasted no time in adding to his squad ahead of the 2018/19 Premier League campaign and the recruitment drive isn’t likely to stop there as there should be many more new faces at the Emirates Stadium before a ball is kicked in the new season.
Here are five players who have been linked with a move to Arsenal this summer.
A goalkeeper could be high up on Emery’s shopping list over the next couple of months as Petr Cech is getting no younger, therefore, now might be the right time for the club to look for his replacement. Jack Butland has proved to be one of the most solid ‘keepers in the Premier League over the last couple of years and with Stoke now destined for the Championship next season, he is certain to leave this summer. Butland’s asking price is thought to be in the region of £40 million which may prove to be a good investment as he has only just turned 25 years old and will have many years ahead of him at the top level.
Another player who is looking for a new club this summer is Jonny Evans as the Northern Ireland international wants to remain in the Premier League. Since leaving Manchester United in 2015, he has excelled at West Brom, in a team which has struggled in the bottom half of the table before failing to avoid the drop last season. Evans knows the Premier League well, therefore, he could immediately step into the back four of the team and would help improve the side. Given his release clause has been triggered due to relegation, the Gunners won’t need to break the bank to acquire his services this summer.
Frenchman Karim Benzema has been at Real Madrid since 2009 and he has been linked with a move to the Premier League on a number of occasions. If the 30-year-old does decide he fancies a change in his career, he would be the perfect fit at Arsenal. The Gunners have not had a number nine in his mould for a long time, so he would be a fantastic acquisition and it could make Arsenal a great bet at 25/1 in the football betting to win the title next season.
18-year-old Ryan Sessegnon is being chased by a number of leading clubs in England as the Fulham wing-back was so impressive last season in helping his side gain promotion into the Premier League. It is only a matter of time before one of the big six pays the big bucks for the English youngster. He would be an immediate starter on the left-hand side of the pitch for Arsenal, which is arguably the weakest area that Emery needs to address this summer.
This transfer window is not the first time that Thomas Lemar has been linked with Arsenal. The Monaco midfielder was expected to sign last summer but it did not materialise. Lemar has been an integral part of the French club’s success over the last few years. He would offer something different to the midfield if a deal for the player can be reached.
With many more weeks left of the transfer window, expect there to be also one or two surprises as Arsenal look to improve on their poor Premier League campaign last season.
